Balatro: The Poker Roguelike Taking Over the Web

Every once in a while, a game comes along that completely reinvents a genre. Balatro is that game for poker. It takes the familiar rules of Texas Hold'em and smashes them into a hypnotic, psychedelic roguelike where the goal isn't just to have a good hand—it's to break the game entirely.

1. It's Not Really About Poker

While you use poker hands like Full Houses and Flushes to score points, Balatro is actually a game of engine building. Your real power comes from Jokers. There are over 150 unique Joker cards, and each one provides a different buff. Some give you a flat multiplier for every heart played, while others might give you massive bonuses if your hand contains a pair of 4s. The trick is finding Jokers that "synergize" or multiply each other's effects.

2. The Power of Multipliers (Mult)

In Balatro, your score is calculated as (Chips) x (Mult). Beginners often focus on getting more chips, but pros know that increasing your **Mult** is the way to reach the millions of points required in later rounds. Look for "X Mult" cards—these don't just add to your multiplier; they multiply the entire total. If you have a base mult of 10 and an "X3 Mult" Joker, your total jumps to 30 instantly.

3. Tarot and Planet Cards

Don't ignore the consumable cards! **Planet cards** allow you to permanently level up specific poker hands. If you find yourself consistently playing Flushes, using Jupiter cards to level up your Flush rank will make every Flush you play worth significantly more base chips and mult. **Tarot cards**, on the other hand, let you modify your deck by turning cards into different suits, enhancing them with gold, or deleting low-value cards entirely to make your deck more consistent.

4. Respect the Boss Blinds

Every third round features a "Boss Blind" with a special rule designed to counter your strategy. One boss might disable all your Heart cards, while another might force you to play only one hand type. Always check the Boss Blind at the start of each "Ante" so you can pivot your strategy or buy the right vouchers to survive.
